About Dr Matt Warner

Dr Matt Warner BSc (Hons) MBBS FRCEM DipIMC (RCS Ed) DipRTM (RCS Ed) is a South African born medical doctor. He is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine, on the GMC Specialist Register with a Licence to Practice.

Dr Matt’s background and training has lead him to develop interest in personal stress management in high performance systems. This comes from the need to maintain good personal mental health despite very challenging work. His first degree was in Psychology with Basic Medical Sciences.

During his junior doctor years, Dr Matt gained additional training in Psychiatry which furthered his interest and knowledge in this area. He has since gained additional training in Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy to learn tools which could help him, his work colleagues- and most importantly, patients.

As well as Emergency Medicine, he has extensive experience in working with Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) across the world. He has worked in England (with London’s Air Ambulance and East Anglian Air Ambulance) and Australia (Sydney HEMS). His present pre-hospital work is with Devon Air Ambulance.

He is also the Medical Director for the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit. This unit trains doctors and provides medical cover for scientists and staff working for the British Antarctic Survey in Polar regions. He is a lecturer and examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Queen Mary University London and the University of Plymouth.

Dr Matt has had to learn how to perform to a very high standard in a high stress environment.  Keeping calm while managing high stress and risk takes training and practice. He has found that techniques learned during his Hypnotherapy training as well as his journey into Mindfulness has relevance to helping patients, relatives and work colleagues stay calm in difficult situations.

Hypnotherapy training has provided him with skills to help people deal with a broad range of problems such as pain, irritable bowel syndrome, phobias, and sleep problems- to name a few.

His exploration of Mindfulness felt like a natural progression from his Hypnotherapy studies. This journey has helped him find his own sense of peace and calm which he loves to share with others.
